How IUD Insertions Work
How IUD Insertion Works
At our Melbourne IUD Clinic, we understand that choosing the right contraceptive method is an important decision. Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are a popular and effective long-term birth control option. If you’re considering an IUD, you may have questions about the insertion process. Here’s what you need to know about how IUD insertion works.
What is an IUD?
An IUD is a small, T-shaped device that is placed inside the uterus to prevent pregnancy. There are two main types of IUDs: hormonal and copper. Hormonal IUDs release hormones to prevent ovulation, while copper IUDs create a hostile environment for sperm.
The Insertion Process
1. Consultation:
Before the insertion, you’ll have a consultation with one of our qualified healthcare providers. This is an opportunity to discuss your medical history, preferences, and any concerns you may have about IUDs.
2. Preparing for Insertion:
On the day of your appointment, we’ll ask you to lie on an examination table, similar to a routine pelvic exam. To ensure your comfort, we may recommend taking over-the-counter pain relief prior to the procedure.
3. Cleaning and Measuring:
Your healthcare provider will gently clean your vaginal area with an antiseptic solution and insert a speculum to allow for a clear view of the cervix. They will then measure the depth of your uterus to ensure proper placement of the IUD.
4. Inserting the IUD:
Using a specialised inserter, the IUD will be carefully placed through the cervix and into the uterus. The entire procedure typically takes just a few minutes. While you may feel some discomfort or cramping during insertion, it usually subsides quickly.
5. Post-Insertion Monitoring:
After the IUD is inserted, we will monitor you for a short period to ensure you are feeling well. You’ll be given information on what to expect in the coming days and how to check the IUD strings.
What to Expect After Insertion
Cramping and Discomfort: It’s common to experience some cramping or spotting after the procedure. This should gradually improve over the next few days.
Follow-Up Appointment: We may recommend a follow-up visit within a few weeks to check that the IUD is correctly positioned and to address any questions or concerns you may have.
